THE THREE STAGES OF ACNE: STAGE ONE MILD ACNE
Acne is a skin condition involving the sebaceous glands of the skin. These sebaceous glands surround each hair follicle and produce sebum, an oily substance, to lubricate the hair. Acne usually appears on the face, back and chest, which left untreated, acne lead to inflammation and damage of the skin. Acne is caused by a plug of dead skin cells and oil in the canal that contains the hair follicle, under the surface of the skin. Because the plugs are underneath the skin surface, scrubbing will not get rid of them. In fact, rubbing the skin or using harsh or abrasive soaps can irritate the skin and make the acne worse.
Acne occurs in three basic stages, starting with mild acne and followed by moderate to severe acne. In stage one, acne is classified as mild when there occurs a maximum of 3- dozen comedones or non-inflammatory lesions such as blackheads and whiteheads or pustules. In addition there can be a moderate number of small, mildly irritated pimples, which appear at or near the surface of the skin in mild acne. But there can be no permanent acne lesions visible from a distance of 2.5 meters from the affected area. Permanent lesions and lesions which are visible from 2.5m away do not qualify as mild acne and would be considered moderate to severe acne.
Blackheads result when a pore is only partially blocked, allowing some of the trapped sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells to slowly drain to the surface. The black color is not caused by dirt but is a reactionary process of the skin's own pigment, melanin, reacting with the oxygen in the air. Whiteheads result when a pore is completely blocked, trapping sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells, causing a white appearance on the surface.Mild acne consists of closed comedones, open comedones and papules, which are defined as small, red, tender bumps with no head. Do not squeeze a papule. It will do no good, and may exacerbate scarring. It can be found in anybody ranging from infants to people in their old age. It can be found anywhere on the skin, that is, the face, arms, back, thighs, chest or shoulders. Mild acne does not usually leave permanent marks on the skin. However, squeezing pimples or trying to open them in other ways increases inflammation and the depth of injury to the skin, making scarring more likely.
