Eczema: a chronic, relapsing itchy rash. Although eczema may look different from person to person, it is most often characterized by dry, red, extremely itchy patches on the skin. Eczema is sometimes referred to as "the itch that rashes," since the itch, when scratched, results in the appearance of the rash.

Edema: another name for swelling.

E.E.S.®: Oral antibiotic used to treat infections. Also sold under the brand name(s): Erythrocin® (Oral), Eryc®, E-Mycin®, Erythromycin (Oral), Ilosone®, Pediamycin®, Robimycin®

Elidel®: by Novartis the first non-steroid prescription for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis

Elocon®: by Schering, (Mometasone furoate) a cortisone-like steroid available in cream, ointment, and lotion form. It is used to treat certain itchy rashes and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Embeline™ E: (Clobetasol) a corticosteroid used to reduce itching, redness, and swelling associated with many skin conditions. Also sold under the brand name(s): Cormax®, Temovate®

Emollient: making soft or supple; soothing especially to the skin or mucous membrane

E-Mycin®: Oral antibiotic used to treat infections. Also sold under the brand name(s): Erythrocin® (Oral), Eryc®, E.E.S.®, Erythromycin (Oral), Pediamycin®, Ilosone® , Robimycin®

Epidermis: the outermost layer of skin. The epidermis has several active zones of skin cells, including cells that participate in immune reactions. Many eczematous skin conditions are initiated in the epidermis.

Exfoliation: peeling and sloughing off of the skin's tissue cells.

Exorex lotion: (Pharmax). This lotion which originally came into this country as an herbal over-the-counter product has recently become available on prescription. It contains some Coal Tar and has fatty acids similar to those found in banana skin. There are other products under this trade name which are not on prescription, but can be purchased in Pharmacies
